The History of Hokokuji

Hokokuji Temple, founded in the early 14th century, belongs to the Kenchoji branch of the Rinzai sect of Zen Buddhism. Its creation is attributed to Ashikaga Ietoki, the father of Ashikaga Takauji, the first shogun of the Muromachi Shogunate, and Uesugi Shigekane, symbolizing the deep ties between the Ashikaga and Uesugi clans. Tengan Eko, the temple’s first head priest, chose this site as a spiritual hub.
