Manpuku-ji Temple was founded during the Nara period (8th century), a time when Buddhism flourished as Japan’s first centralized state developed. The temple was established by the monk Gyoki, who was commissioned by Emperor Shomu to pray for the end of a plague that had devastated the Kanto region.
