Myohonji Temple
The Charm of Myohonji Temple
Myohonji Temple is the oldest Nichiren temple in Kamakura, founded by Yoshimoto Hiki, a Confucian scholar who served Emperor Juntoku. Originally, the site was the residence of the Hiki clan, who were loyal retainers of the Kamakura Shogunate. However, the clan was destroyed in the “Hiki Rebellion” of the early 13th century. Yoshimoto, who survived in Kyoto, later returned to Kamakura, met Nichiren, and dedicated his estate to establish Myohonji Temple.
