Discover the Towering White Kannon Statue and Its History

Located in Ofuna, Kamakura City, Ofuna Kannon-ji Temple is a relatively new Buddhist temple known for its massive Byakue Kannon (White-Robed Kannon) statue. Construction began in 1927, initiated by local volunteers who formed the “Gokoku Ofuna Kannon Association” after World War I. Originally, a full standing statue twice the height of the Great Buddha of Nara was planned. However, due to ground stability issues, the design was changed to the current bust-style statue.

Although the statue’s outline was completed in 1934, the construction was halted due to war and economic depression. It wasn’t until 1960 that the statue was finally completed, following Japan’s post-war recovery. In 1981, the temple was officially registered as a Soto Zen Buddhist temple affiliated with Soji-ji Temple (總持寺).

Scenic Highlights: Architecture, Nature, and Atmosphere

The 25-meter-tall Byakue Kannon statue is an awe-inspiring presence that can be seen from JR Ofuna Station. Set on a hillside, visitors can enter the interior of the statue, where they’ll find a thousand small Buddha images and peace-related exhibits. At night, the statue glows in warm orange lighting, creating a magical atmosphere.

The temple grounds are beautifully adorned with seasonal flowers such as Somei Yoshino cherry blossoms and wisteria. Combined with panoramic views from the hill, the scenery changes with each season. It’s also a popular photo spot—perfect for social media.

Spiritual Significance and Prayers

Built to honor those lost in wars and atomic bombings, the White-Robed Kannon symbolizes peace and compassion. The temple also features the Kosodate Jizo (子育地蔵尊), believed to bless fertility, safe childbirth, and children’s health, and the Enmusubi Tree (縁結びの木), prayed to for romantic and marital harmony.

Omikuji, Goshuin, and Unique Temple Traditions

Visitors can receive goshuin (temple stamps) as a memento of their visit. In addition to standard versions, there are seasonal and monthly variations, with a popular original stamp book featuring the Kannon statue on its cover. The “Lucky Owl Bell” is another popular item to take home.
