The Beauty of Komyo-ji Temple and Its Sakura

Founded in the mid-13th century, Komyo-ji Temple is a historic site known for its picturesque sakura. The temple grounds feature 27 sakura trees of five different varieties, allowing visitors to enjoy hanami over an extended period, from Kawazu-zakura to Kamata-zakura. Particularly, during late March to early April, when Somei Yoshino reaches full bloom, the temple’s main gate and hall are enveloped in cherry blossoms, enchanting all who visit.

Hanami Event and Special Openings

During the sakura season, Komyo-ji Temple hosts the “Hanami-kai” (Sakura Viewing Gathering), where normally restricted areas such as the upper level of the main gate and the second floor of Daiseikaku Hall are specially opened to the public. From these vantage points, visitors can enjoy sweeping views of the temple’s sakura while savoring matcha tea, fully immersing themselves in the atmosphere of spring. Additionally, the second floor of Daiseikaku allows a special viewing of the temple’s principal deity, the Amida Triad.

Scenic Views and Sakura Landscapes

Sakura trees line the temple’s approach from the main gate to the main hall, creating a breathtaking and grand display. One of the most stunning views is from near the main gate, where the emerald-green temple roof harmonizes beautifully with the soft pink of the sakura, offering a perfect photo opportunity.

Behind the temple lies Amateru-yama Observatory, one of Kanagawa’s “50 Scenic Spots.” From here, visitors can enjoy panoramic views of Kamakura’s cityscape and the ocean at Yuigahama Beach. During spring, the contrast of the pink sakura against the blue sea creates a mesmerizing landscape, making it an ideal place for a peaceful retreat.

A Tranquil Sakura Viewing Experience

Komyo-ji Temple is located in the Zaimokuza area, one of the closest temples to the sea in Kamakura. The peaceful surroundings, accompanied by the scent of the ocean breeze, make it an excellent spot for a quiet hanami experience. Since it is relatively unknown to tourists, visitors can enjoy the sakura in a calm and serene setting. Experience the unique blend of history, sakura, and ocean air at Komyo-ji Temple this spring.
