What Is ZEN NIGHT KAMAKURA?
ZEN NIGHT KAMAKURA is a ticketed night viewing held on autumn evenings at Kenchoji Temple (建長寺) in Kita-Kamakura. Visitors walk through the temple grounds among illuminated autumn leaves, with music and the sound of insects, and see a misty sea of clouds in the garden of the Hojo (abbot’s quarters) and gates lit with patterns of light. It is organized by VIE Inc. and Nikkei Inc., with the special cooperation of Kenchoji.
The year 2028 marks 750 years since the death of Daikaku Zenji (Lanxi Daolong), the Zen master who founded Kenchoji, and the temple is preparing commemorative events. This night viewing is one of the projects leading up to that anniversary. 2026 is its second year at Kenchoji; in 2025 it was called ZEN NIGHT WALK KAMAKURA.

Dates and Tickets
In 2026 it runs from Thursday, October 29 to Sunday, December 6, from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. Last entry is 7:30 p.m. It goes ahead in rain but is canceled in stormy weather; cancellations are announced on the official website.
Tickets (tax included): advance tickets for adults are 2,400 yen on weekdays and 2,900 yen on weekends and holidays; same-day tickets are 2,900 yen on weekdays and 3,400 yen on weekends and holidays. November 3 and November 23 are charged at the weekend and holiday rate. Children 12 and under pay half price and must be accompanied by a guardian. Children 6 and under are free; they need no ticket, but tell the staff at the entrance.
Advance tickets are not tied to a date and allow one entry on any single day during the event. Re-entry and refunds are not possible. Same-day tickets are sold at the reception by the Somon gate from 5:00 to 7:30 p.m., and only cashless payment is accepted.
Highlights: A Garden of Clouds and Gates of Light
“Neuro Music,” created by the organizer VIE, plays throughout the grounds. Along the Seifu-no-michi path hung with wind chimes, you reach the Sanmon gate, where the movement of the wind is shown with light. The garden of the golden Karamon gate, Yugentei, is lit with patterns of light.
In the Hojo garden, “Unkai Furyu no Mai” creates a great sea of clouds among illuminated autumn leaves, with the chirping of bell crickets layered over the music. New in 2026 is the “Koyo Yomichi,” an illuminated mountain path you walk while listening to the sound of insects.
The ceiling of the Hatto (Dharma Hall) bears the dragon painting “Unryu-zu” (Cloud Dragon) by the Japanese painter Junsaku Koizumi. The Hatto can be seen at night only on October 30, October 31 and November 1, after 6:30 p.m.
Special Tickets: Brainwave Zazen and EX Special Seats
“Brainwave Zazen” takes place at the Mushizuka, an insect memorial conceived by anatomist Takeshi Yoro and designed by architect Kengo Kuma. You sit in zazen (seated meditation) wearing a device that measures brainwaves, and see your state of mind shown as sound and images. It is by advance reservation only, with five sessions every 30 minutes from 5:30 p.m. and 10 people per session. Tickets are 3,400 yen on weekdays and 3,900 yen on weekends and holidays for adults, and include admission to the night viewing. There are stairs and a slope on the way to the Mushizuka.
The “EX Special Seats” are on the second floor of the Tokugetsuro, looking down on the Hojo garden. They are sold only to members of JR Central’s Express Reservation and smartEX services. Prices are 3,400 yen on weekdays and 3,900 yen on weekends and holidays for adults, and 1,700 yen and 1,950 yen for elementary school children.
What It Was Like in 2025
When we visited in 2025, a line had formed in front of the Somon gate before opening, even on a weekday. You take off your shoes to enter the Hojo (Ryuo-den). The highlights were the approach wrapped in mist and colored light, the Sanmon gate lit in color, the garden of the Karamon gate with its patterns of light, the sea of clouds in the Hojo garden, and the video and sound in the Hatto. The temple grounds get cold at night, so dress warmly.
The areas and experiences have changed for 2026, so the route and crowds may not be the same as in 2025.
Autumn Leaves and Things to Know Before You Go
The autumn leaves at Kenchoji are usually at their best from late November to early December. Early in the event the leaves have often not yet turned, so if the leaves are your main reason to go, late November or later is the better time.
Tripods, monopods, selfie sticks and other camera supports cannot be used. Suitcases and other luggage cannot be left at the venue.
Access: Visiting During Your Stay at Toshi’s Place
Kenchoji is about a 15-minute walk from Kita-Kamakura Station on the JR Yokosuka Line, or about 5 minutes by Enoden bus. From Kamakura Station it is about 10 minutes by bus or about 30 minutes on foot. There is no car or bicycle parking during the event, so come by train and bus.
The night viewing ends at 8:00 p.m., so staying in Kamakura lets you walk the Zen temple at night without worrying about the last train home. At Toshi’s Place, fully unstaffed smart hotels with full kitchens and no meals provided, you can spend the rest of the autumn evening at your own pace.
Summary
ZEN NIGHT KAMAKURA lets you walk Kenchoji, the first-ranked of Kamakura’s Five Great Zen Temples, among autumn leaves, light and sound on autumn nights only. You will meet a quiet, otherworldly Kenchoji that is completely different from the daytime temple.
